The automatic extension is 6 months. You don't "ask" for an extension - you inform the IRS you are taking one. Your taxes are due on the regular deadline (April 15, or thereabouts), and your return is due October 15 (or thereabouts).

If you need an extension beyond October 15, you do have to ask - and obtain consent in advance.
