Where is, "If don't you care about the planet without which, any and every, one of the points made below would be impossible, vote Republican?"
We have been pissing in our own pool since before the Industrial Revolution(see anthropocene epoch..and I would extend that to the quaternary with the extinction of megafauna, etc). Now there's a new revolution happening. The earth is giving the finger to humankind. It may not be too late save a tiny fraction of the natural world, but it's far too late to save the vast majority of it.
The fact that CO2(and other gases) warm the planet was demonstrated by Tyndall in the 1850s. He further quantified the relative absorptive effects of various gases in the atmosphere. I am not going to go back to Fourier, as he had the correct insight, but he missed the crucial mechanism.
I could go on..
Humans have truly missed the forest to make a few quick bucks off the trees. Sorry to mangle the idiom. At most points in human history, that was true for everything but the forest, but now even the literal forests are weeping.
