Santa Maria and all the santos, my ninos! Did this person just arrive from the Moon? Huge chunks of North America used to belong to Spain and then Mexico -- that piece of history is reflected in place names on both coasts and far inland, and I thought every US schoolchild knew that much.

I had a bemusing experience on a flight with a young Spaniard, though, who was traveling back home from meetings in Silicon Valley. He'd had a few extra days to tour, ended up in Santa Cruz, and based on all the signage, was baffled when it turned out that the natives spoke no conversational Spanish. I told him to google Fr. Junipero Serra -- but what with the noise of the engines it was hard to inform him, and he was working on his laptop anyway.
