In reality coal causes huge amounts of C02, toxins, and carcinogens to be released. There are cancer clusters around coal power plants all over the US, not to mention the environmental disaster of mining coal. Because coal is so inherently dirty and has a very low energy density in terms of kWh/ton of fuel there isn't much that can be done to clean it up.
