DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) -
Ron Paul appeared to have slightly more support than Mitt Romney in GOP entrance polls taken minutes before Tuesday evening's Iowa caucuses -- the first contest in the 2012 presidential caucus and primary season.
Paul, a U.S. representative from Texas, had 24% support in the final entrance poll tallies, and Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, had 23% in the sampling of Iowa voters as they headed into their caucus sites throughout the state.
Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania was at 19%, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was at 13%. Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota were fifth and sixth in those polls, respectively.
The caucuses began at 7 p.m. in 809 locations .....................
