jost et al confirm that the main defining characteristic is conservatives/authoritarians aversion to uncertainty - so they are drawn to leaders with royal certitude who can help them judge the world in absolutes - black and white/right and wrong, and bring order, and belief systems that make judgement easy, to help them reduce the uncertainty and unpredictability - and their stress and fear
