(53,544 posts)but every second without the Speaker determined puts the Democrats at a disadvantage. The Democrats need to know ASAP who they will be working with as Speaker and to promote themselves for the key committee positions they have an interest. Any delay will also be criticized by the Republicans and DT. When the Speaker is determined she will then have the task along with her fellow leadership to assign committee assignments. That is not an easy task to do with nearly 240 members especially with members wanting a different committee from the past and not knowing enough about new members. New members may not be sure what they would want. And not everyone will be totally happy. And then they need time to get up to speed on their committee assignments if they are new or there is a change for the new session too.
