Merchants would then ask to see a form of ID, usually a driver's license. It's been so long since Trump entered a store and bought anything, he's not aware that debit cards tied to checking accounts are widely used today and that users input PIN numbers as a layer of security. He's just waaaaay out of date and utterly clueless.
