than it would cost on this side of the border, and whatever Mexican agency gets the money, they'll siphon off at least half of it. Cheaper costs for the US, lousier treatment for asylum seekers that gets communicated back to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, discouraging future caravans.

Trump may be a complete asshole, but he isn't totally stupid, despite what most of us believe. Besides, it gives him leverage with the new government of Mexico, he can threaten to cut off the money and seal the border if he needs that as a bargaining chip.
