My 71 year old father, who has worked for a defense contractor for 49 1/2 years and has been a life-long Republican has finally gotten fed up with Trump. We were talking about all the environmental regulations that Trump has overturned, mostly by either executive order or by appointing people to dismantle agencies. When I told him he appointed Aurelia Skipwith, a former attorney for Monsanto to be Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, that was the end. He said "I don't know if I can support Trump any more. I may have to vote Democrat, whoever they put up so we can hold the nation together."
None of the scandals mattered. Everything was waved off as "They're all crooked" or the like. What got through was the dismantling of Bear's Ears and the "sudden" discovery of uranium on the lands that were made available. The regulations allowing dumping coal sludge into river ways. The re-classification of protected wetlands when it comes to pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer dumping. And then the damage being done to parks like Yellowstone and Joshua Tree. When I told him about monarch populations being down 97% from the 1980's due to carbon dioxide, and Trump appointing someone whose company all but orchestrated "colony collapse" in bees, that was the breaking point.
Even though I'm horrified at the state of affairs of the country, I'm proud of my father for finally deciding that he can't support the man that is actively trying to destroy America's natural heritage.
