I keep hearing this on US forums.

I've lived in the UK all my life. It most definitely is not that commonly used or heard.

It's a very strong taboo curse in most social environments, not much different to the situation in the US. If you're visiting the UK, I'd advise caution about the circumstances in which you use it.

To address the OP while I'm here, I'd understood "motherfucker" to originally refer to someone who used female prostitutes, the inference being that the prostitutes are somebody's mothers.

I'll leave others to debate whether that's an apt description of Trump.
