(11,639 posts)I havent been in school in a very long time and have very little memories of spirit week. There are a lot of articles out there of schools having a blackout day during spirit week. And kids taking it to far by painting themselves black as well, especially their face.
It seems most schools forbid the practice of completely painting your face, any color, at a school event.
Not defending this obviously, just that it is a bad practice, their parents and other adults should know better and the intent may be taken out of context.
This a lot more about poor adulting than racist kids.
Why?
Because kids are not racist at birth.
Racism, hate and apathy are taught.
These kids are surrounded by racist, hateful and apathetic adults.
Doesnt excuse their behavior or make it ok. Its just context.
What they need is real adults teaching them that this kind of shit is racist and hateful. Not standing there and letting it happen. Or worse, encouraging it.
Its shameful that McConnell, married to a person of color, in Kentucky, would not be out in front of all this trying to defuse and educate these young people and their deplorable adults that are supposed to guide and shape them.
Its shameful and sad.
