The "bad vegan" story is a staple of any thread or conversation regarding vegans.

Really? Who knew? Maybe it's because they're so annoyingly memorable. That seems to be the best explanation. Meanwhile the "regular" vegans just go about their everyday lives without boasting or without harassing or proselytizing... and their eating habits are largely unnoticed. Makes sense to me.
