It's coming out now the person who broke the story is a former Brietbart employee and runs a right-wing web site. He won't divulge his source.
Northam says it's not him in the picture. Even if it is him, people do not understand the place and time in which it was taken. As you say, context is important. As I've posted elsewhere, the fact a med school allowed that picture in their yearbook rather than kicking him out of school for it speaks volumes. I says a lot about the context of the time, place and community standards.
BTW, I am just a little younger than Northam and also from the South. If we'd dressed up as MJ in the 80's I'm pretty sure most of us would have darkened our faces too. It would not have been meant to mock him or demean him and it wouldn't have turned a single head.
