(58,785 posts)respect for a woman who would be my governor if the votes of those who voted or would have voted for her weren't ruthlessly, blatantly repressed and stolen. Or for the symbolism of choosing this person to spearhead our party's response.
But looking at what he has to lose, my best guess is it'll do little harm. Sanders has been trying to develop a relationship with POC groups lately, but my guess is over time he's unlikely to draw more than before for the same reasons. Satisfying what the POC voting bloc requires would mean sacrificing his attempt to develop a substantial white populist following. And since the Republicans are leaking conservative voters, it's hard to imagine he won't try to pick more of their populist types up this time than he managed in 2016.
And that'd be a problem. Populists always include a significant portion who do want progressive programs for themselves but combine that with socially conservative attitudes. And social conservative oil and minority water just don't mix too well, as we saw before rather spectacularly. One might even have suspected that his oil went out of the way to repel the water.
