(1,376 posts)Is your state government on top of disaster planning? If you don't know, start asking your local state legislator and emergency services specialist (city/county/etc/).
If they aren't, start raising hell over it with your local and state electeds. Every state, county, and city has a office of emergency services or something equivalent, but they are funded and prioritized by local elected officials. If they are professionally organized, get involved.
If your are physically capable, get involved and go through a CERT training course:

If you have special training or experience, look into volunteering for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol, the Red Cross, or similar organizations. They always need volunteers.
In any disaster, odds are you and your neighbors need to be able to provide your basic needs for at least 72 hours; research what that would mean in your community and start taking action.
