3. I am nowhere near as well off as my parents

at my age. I invested too much time and $$$ into formal education. Far more than they did. And I went to work for an employer. They took the risks and reaped the rewards of being self-employed. I think those two factors account for much of the difference. If you work for somebody else you earn wages - if you are self-employed you earn wages plus profits but both wages and profits are far more risky and uncertain.
