Conflict driven programing keeps people coming back. It is a satisfying way if confirming biases.
Viewers get a thrill out of watching people argue getting as mean as they can get. They also like to pick up talking points to use against opposing views.

The more controversial the story, the more useful it is for stoking the hate and division that has infected our politics and daily life interactions.
