(4,856 posts)Love Lennon and Waters. U2 fans are metaphorically what DU has become. They aren't that edgy anymore, they come from all over the map, they all want their singers to sing and just shut up. DU lacks serious balls these days. That's what happens I suppose when you become mainstream. I personally think Joseph Campbell had it right about the artists and musicians ushering in the future "Golden Age". True artists have an amazing ability to see the world and it's issues. Music used to be about raising consciousness and bringing people together.Hence Live Aid. These days it seems mainstream music is mainly a selfish endevour similar to politics. Personally I think the reason Bill O'Reillys tell musicians to shut up is because they are afraid of the power of music to bring people together for a good cause. Intellectually musicians and artists are far ahead of politicians (Roger Waters Perfect Sense comes to mind). If people would have taken Waters serious back in the 90's the entire last 12 years of Mid East bollocks may have been avoided. I wouldn't expect much from people here though who chide Yoko Ono or cast John Lennon off as just an angry badboy. Be content that you are on the right path when it comes to believing in the right cause. "Imagine" was as you said an anti religion song and this CeeLo fella doesn't have a clue. Alas the US is a fucked up religious country that accepts all opinions even if they are misinformed. The US is also a capitalist buy any and sell anything for a buck land. The music industry in this day and age will continue to pump out drivel and the saps will keep lapping it up. Consciousness isn't currently high on the priority list in the US or at DU at the moment.
