5. Texas County judges are not judges as in trials, etc.

They are more like county executives embedded in a county commissioner form of government.
Many are political hacks, though interestingly, Harry Truman started his political career as a county judge in Missouri, which has a similar system (as does Arkansas) of county government. Truman actually made a name for himself as a competent steward of county government as county judge.
