Always had to change trains at Port Bou, across the border from Cerbere. Spain used a narrower gauge in the '60s, don't know if that's changed.

I don't know if it was designed to resist invasion.

New high-speed rail is standard gauge, to allow trains from France to get to their high-speed destinations without stopping to change trains.

I didn't mind changing trains. Port Bou has a nice seaport and seaside restaurants and bars with outside tables. Cheers.
