(60,169 posts)Totalitarian-minded people (Ailes, e.g.) always admire totalitarian regimes that are solidly entrenched in power. In the Nixon era, the Soviet Union seemed like it would last forever.
Republicans may not understand exactly WHY they are so hated, but they are certainly dimly aware of it, and so feel the need to suppress criticism. There are insecurities that need to be assuaged, after all.
The Nixon Republicans knew how much they were despised, and they wanted to turn the tide of public opinion. The easiest way to do that is make sure the public HAS no other opinion than their own. To do that, you need to control the media. Go to some small town where the only TV station you see shown anywhere is Fox "News," and guess how that town votes? It does work.
