In reply to the discussion: One more thing: Can we postpone the freak-outs until we get to read Mueller's report? [View all]Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)Mueller indicted about 37 people, most of whom were for Russian interfering in our election and democracy. But those were Russians. The Americans have been indicted for lying and money-related crimes, campaign finance, and other things. With the possible exception of Flynn.
Mueller did not indict any American for Russia-conspiracy crimes. We know that. Particularly the Trump family.
This was the purpose of the investigation, and he did his job. So we weren't "had." This was the purpose of the Special Counsel.
Knowing something occurred, and proving it beyond a reasonable doubt are two different things. I've said all along that it's very difficult to get the head guy because they generally buffer themselves from crimes, giving oral instructions to staffers to do their dirty work for them. Trump has been operating as a crime boss for decades, so he knows not to say stupid things or be caught doing criminal acts directly.
What we DON'T know: If Mueller found obstruction of justice by Trump. If he did, he wouldn't indict Trump, since Mueller is a by-the-book guy, and it's generally accepted that Presidents can't be indicted.
The investigation was not a waste of time or money. It was necessary and has been fruitful. If he found that the Trump campaign didn't aid and abet, then so be it. We have to respect that.
But it's possible he found evidence of Russia-related crimes but is passing it on to the DOJ or whoever to take action. He would probably not indict someone for those things, if it would tip the hand to possible future indictments.
We were hoping for indictments of Jr. and Kushner, I know. So that's a disappointment. But the investigation was not a waste of time or money. The NY courts are also not through filing their own indictments for various things.
Let's not forget that the investigation led to The Trump Foundation being shut down and Trump fined.
