It would violate rules on classified material; it would violate rules promulgated by the federal judicial branch to safeguard all kinds of grand jury and other confidential information; it would violate DOJ rules. And many of those are either under authority given the those two branches by the Constitution, or authority granted by the other branch, the legislature. In other words, it should invite all three branches to say, "You just screwed with us and showed us some serious contempt because, well, you just think you're all that."

It's nice to say, "Oooh, Trump hasn't followed the rules." It's another thing to turn around and say, "Well, when we do it, of course it's not just okay, but a great and glorious thing." Even if it is politically the smart thing to do, in the end it treats all three branches like cheap whores for personal political profit.

Yes, when Nadler and Pelosi say otherwise, they know this. They also know that they can posture and be as authoritative and authoritarian as they want because that's free political rhetoric that plays well. Nobody's going to go to jail to comply with their threats, and they're perfectly fine with catch-22s. You get punished for contempt of Congress or, if you avoid that, you get punished for contempt of court, and if you avoid that, you violate the law so that you are now completely impeachable if not subject to mandatory investigation and dismissal. Either way, Barr gets punished, which is a good outcome. It's not a reasonable one, but for some it's completely fair.
