he knows it will come out, just as the iran-contra story eventually came out.

his goal is to get away with it.

all he's trying to do is set the stage for barely politically viable pardons and contain the electoral damage for republicans.

he'd keep it secret if he could, but he's ok with it coming out if it has to.

he can still help the criminals get away with it, and that's what he aims to do.
