(997 posts)Around most of the western world gun are viewed as a hobby like golf. It's something that you go to a club to do and maybe you hunt a few times a year. The guns are usually secured and are purchased for enjoyment.
The core of gun owners in this country view firearms as a God given right and are willing to use them on other people. Look at how many people buy guns for self defense and keep a loaded gun handy in the house or carry on concealed on their person. What do you think self defense with a firearm entails? I'm not saying all gun owners are like this but a sizable amount are, enough that they are the ones driving the conversation. The gun culture in the US has no parallels anywhere else in the western world.
That's why we will likely not see anything even remotely close to what has happened in other countries for several generations, if ever. Not saying we shouldn't try but rather saying don't hold your breath.
