I'm 71 and while learning about my personality and nature as a very long extension of my recovery from alcoholism beginning back in the 90s, I've discovered I'm what's known as a highly sensitive person (HSP), along with being a life-long introvert and stoic.

Whew!

The combination of those bits of genetics (along with being raised in the country) add up to a poor soul that shuns big crowds and looses all concentration where multiple noises or voices are heard. I will notice a train coming many miles before anyone else, and it's a difference in brain function rather than ultra-sensitive hearing like I assumed for years.

Anyone fitting part or most of that profile makes us around 5-to-10% of the population, perhaps more depending on the metrics are done. I've enjoyed discovering the reasons I'm different.
