There's also the verse celebrating Muscle Shoals - one of the earliest music production studios to be integrated, and one that hosted dozens of black recording artists in rural Alabama. And, as someone posted downthread, there's "The Ballad of Curtis Loew." Southern identity is complex, and while Southern pride can be shorthand for 'racist', it isn't always, and in the case of Skynyrd, there's plenty of evidence that they weren't.

The current lineup is a different story. But it's a totally different band.
