I always felt very disconnected from it since most of the family from that side came before WWI, so they didnt experience the horrors. They also all died before I was born, so I was always more American than anything, but going there on a spur of the moment because I was close enough (I had job related stuff to do in Warsaw and Kiev) was very eye opening.
