(72,277 posts)7. "Half-life" is a common scientific term that is used for more than measuring radioactivity.
Length of effective action of medications, for example, uses half-life as a measurement.
Half-life simply refers to the time it takes for 50% of any given substance to dissolve, wear away, evaporate, become inactive, etc.
Once 50% of a given whole is gone, half-life measures the 50% decrease of the remainder, and so on, and so on...
