Of needing to join a group, and act accordingly to the mores of that group, for self preservation. That is not however an excuse for individual actions. To try to say "I did it only because my group made me" is simply a variation of the just following orders excuse.
In any case, there has been no evidence presented to indicate the assailant was pressured by any peer group. It appears he is a bully with racial issues who is willing to assault and seriously injure his victims.Yet many are willing to seek excuses for his actions once the initial assumption is shown to be incorrect.
