(11,767 posts)Of course there is prejudice and bigotry in EVERY racial group. Like I said in my post, the animosity between Black people and Latinos goes back a long time. I was responding to the person who implied that having been in prison or knowing someone who had been was something like a prerequisite to understanding why Black youth would attack a Mexican kid and his mother. My response was that it was not required to have that experience.
I grew up in Southern California. In my city there were Black people, Mexican/Mexican-Americans, and Filipinos. I personally got along with everyone. I had Black friends, Filipino friends, and Mexican friends. I was also very aware that there were always tensions, especially between Black kids and Mexican kids. Everyone picked on the Filipinos until they started carrying serious weapons.
There is also A LOT of prejudice within the Latino community against other Latinos. I dare you to call a Puerto Rican a Mexican, or a Mexican a Salvadorian.
Discrimination is a natural human instinct. We do tend to prefer being around people who are like us and share commonalities. The problem occurs when we start assigning value to the differences and saying that (x group is inferior because...). We can also learn to discriminate less and celebrate difference, but that takes positive exposure to outside groups and increasing experience.
