28. I think Steele's decision to remain a Republican makes perfect sense.

All these media appearances, the guy remains in demand, despite being relatively boring on camera. So, to do that, you have to be something out of the ordinary.

Conformist Trumpanzees? Most Republicans are as conformist as they can be, marching in lock step as if they were a Red Army honor guard, marching before the party leaders in Red Square in Moscow on May 1st.

Democrats in disagreement? Hell, is there any other kind?

But a dissident Republican? Now THERE is a newsworthy endangered species. Switch parties and join the Democrats? Noble, but you just gave your media star status a shelf life of about ten days. But stay a Republican and insist that the party may have lost its way, but it's still your party? Now THERE'S a stance that takes guts. OK, he's got SOME cover because the last thing Republicans will do these days is give Democrats MORE ammunition to call them racist, but sooner or later you just KNOW Trump is going to lose it over something Steele says, and then he'll call Steele something worth censuring Trump all over again. Now THERE is a headline--the Democrats in the House censuring Trump for something he said about a Republican!

So you see, I don't think Steele is staying a Republican out of conviction. Republicans with convictions became extinct with McCain's passing. I think Steele is staying a Republican because it gives him a longer media shelf life. After all, finding a Republican spouting something other than total garbage these days is about as startling as the discovery that the coelacanth was still alive.
