I had a similar thing happen once in Arizona, driving back to SD from Phoenix. On a very deserted stretch of the highway, I was very grateful to come upon a much needed rest stop. As I exited, I noticed the driveway and actual rest stop building were very much shielded from view of the highway, and as I drove up to the parking area, there was only me (a woman in a vintage primo-condition Volvo) and an old pickup with a couple in it at the other end. When I returned from the restroom as I approached my car, I noticed the woman was now standing nearby. "Wash your windows for some spare change?" she asked as I got in and closed my car door. Instinctively, I shook my head "no," and as I started up the car and began to back out of my parking space, I looked over to see that the man who was seated on the passenger side of their pickup had his door wide open. I drove past slowly, and our eyes met. Never before had I felt the reality of "if looks could kill." He had such a look of hatred and disgust towards me.....I truly felt I had dodged a bullet (maybe literally) by not letting her soap up my windows, get in the way of my backing out, and thus make me vulnerable to an attack....Never would have even put the idea together (being a rather easy-going person as I am), if it hadn't been for that look....I shudder even now remembering it many years later.
