(100,133 posts)It is by no means only the US -- altho since this is our country we bear particular responsibility here and should act on it, and not give up.
It feels like the end of a great cycle in history. If the planet gets as bad as it might, then it will be more like a Kali Yuga.
In 2007-2008 when DU was having fisticuffs over Democratic presidential candidates, with especial venom directed at Barack Obama from certain quarters (who never got over it, seemingly), I remember saying that Obama was only a human being and not the Messiah. But. But, given the Constitutional damage wrought on this country by BushCheney, he represented a chance to begin to rectify things. Only a chance. And if enough Dem/Progressives/Lefts refused to support the Democratic nominee, that chance would disappear for good.
Obama did as well as he could in his two terms in office, given the forces against him. I only dispute one of his decisions (to not go extremely public with Russia's attack on us, and in essence declare war), and have no idea who could have done better in the circumstances. GOP Senators have proven traitorous in all but name.
So here we are today, with his successor being Trump, a madman who has propelled our slide into a non-Constitutional oligarchy and greased the skids. We are not only where I feared we would be, but far worse. This may be the end of our cycle in history as a republic -- and no place else to go.
Despair is not an option. We have choices. This is our own ground.
