(30,077 posts)We have bears and there are poisonous snakes. (Never saw a rattler, though others have. I've run into water moccasins-zoinks.) The rule of thumb for snakes and bears is if you leave them alone they'll do the same for you. There are other predators I'd be worried about. So, no gun needed for snakes and bears.
As to large amounts of money for buys on Craigslist, Facebook, etc: that's why you always pick an open,busy, well lit neutral spot. I've purchased items in the police department parking lot and in a high school lot, along with Target and Walmart. You're less likely to get ripped off or robbed if there's traffic. And if you find a small town police department you can go in, tell them what you're doing and an officer might even watch out of boredom.
(Find a town with less than 5,000 population and do it on a Sunday afternoon. Unless there's an emergency the officer will probably watch out of boredom and to have something on the blotter. Once again, no gun needed.)
