(100,133 posts)...I knew of only one gun in one household: that of the man who was a member of the Los Angeles Police Dept. If anybody had a hunting rifle it was because they hunted, but I don't recall any hunters.
Personal weaponry was not a topic of conversation among the adults, and I was a child who evesdropped on adults.
Then we moved to the town next door to Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station, and many of our neighbors were active-duty personnel in various branches of the military. It was assumed with good reason that all military-style weapons were safely stored on military bases, not being collected in the homes of civilians, whether or not they were veterans.
Our parents -- and we youngsters -- were much more concerned about the Cuban Missile Crisis than we were about some ass shooting up the local mall out of a sense of personal grievance.
