that, for some reason, there is a tendency towards rather hysterical reactions to even minor events as well as knee-jerk, false equivalencies, etc.

My policy is to look at it that way and not get on the bandwagon while awaiting more sound information on a situation. Maybe it is the herd instinct or just the bleed and lead emphasis that modern media goes by, or other factors as well?

That is often how the real witch hunts of old and some historical debacles began, as well. Sometimes it can do much more harm than good and being prone to too much fear about things can make us more vulnerable and our own imagination can get stirred up easily, which might be something to discourage.

It might be a good idea, sometimes, to err on the side of caution, but in some situations it is absurd, considering how many possible dangers we might encounter everyday and in unexpected ways, yet we prevail.
