His following is a function of the tendency of some to suspiciously avoid those very same newspapers and look for alternative sources. I.e., Abramson's restyling of what he reads in the NYT, etc., from his New Hampshire subdivision.

Political psychologists and sociologists study these things. Abramson's one of many using the web to monetize distrust anything "establishment" by affirming that to a growing following with a strong emotional need to understand. Wanting to believe one has reliable, inside information, as well as the explanations of conspiracy theories, are ways to manage anxiety.

And these are anxious times. Mother Jones is hardly the last word on Abramson, just one of many, who should be considered.
