(151,281 posts)143. Yes. That was a horrible thing, and is something that could
occur again, actually. Even though we are much better in dealing with the kind of complications that killed those people now, thousands still die each year after contracting influenza. Most people do not, in a typical year, though, so we tend to poo-poo the risks.
Any year, though, a novel mutation in the flu virus could make it far more lethal. We aren't very good at predicting that.

Yes! Elderly are at a higher risk of flu complications which can be killers. But even young people
