Perception is everything. I believe that most of Mr Trump's supporters perceive that they have been ripped off six ways to Sunday, to the point where the wish to "get back" at those who have taken from them receive their just desserts is overwhelming. Along comes someone who gleefully gets away with destroying all the conventions which they, themselves, no longer respect because they see them as part of the mechanism keeping them down. His biggest promise is to screw "them" royally. It takes examination of the fine print to realize that he's also going to screw you just as bad, or harder.

And that screwing is not so obvious, and is mediated by the great validation one receives for his own hatred, and his own perception of having been wronged. As Mr Trump continues to feed those perceptions, indeed to inflame them more and more, some never even notice the knife being slipped into their backs.

Anyway, that's my guess.
