In reply to the discussion: I think its time to boycott Facebook. [View all]LeftInTX
(34,819 posts)110. Most of mine are Democrats and we're very like minded
I have a few Republican family members and friends, but they don't post much politics. You can also select which friends read your posts.
I'm a Democratic Precinct Chair and I have a busy calendar with everything going on. Facebook is how so much of what we do is scheduled.
I'm always getting invites to local events/protests/campaign events etc. etc. It's also how our elected officials announce their town halls. I'm represented by a Democratic Congressman, State Senator, State Rep, and County Commissioner. My local city council rep and mayor are progressive. (I live in San Antonio) Facebook is also great for local civil engagement. Local government is always announcing volunteer opportunities via Facebook. It's how alot of our local progressive groups organize.
I'm also FB friends with numerous elected Democrats and candidates. I also follow and like all my elected officials.
We're kicking off campaign reelection events via Facebook.
For me it's mostly about connecting.
I'm also in a few hobby groups that involve Gardening and Genealogy.
I'm not giving it up. I don't care much for Zuckerberg, because I find his "connecting people" to be disingenuous because Zuckerberg is all about business, not about "creating relationships".
Google is actually much worse. I'm not giving up Google either. I'm not throwing my Android phone away..I'm not giving up YouTube... (YouTube is a RW cesspool)
Also I'm not Boycotting Amazon either.
Also I'm not boycotting Microsoft......(Although I don't use their stupid browsers!!!!)
If you wonder if FB is for you and aren't a member and don't have a reason to join, then it probably isn't worth it.
However if there are certain hobbies, groups, activities that you are involved with and if they connect via Facebook then you probably will want to join. I joined Facebook years ago because my local gardening group was on there.
If you have a reason to join then, it's probably worth it. If you don't have a reason, then it probably isn't worth it.

Fakebook is no better, and may actually be worse than the fox propaganda network.

You don't need Facebook to ask a question and receive an answer in your field of interest
