characteristics, and beliefs in common. Including their common giant enemy of the normal peoples of the world who aren't interested in blowing up others or their own world because it's imperfect.

Yes, they understand, even respect, and certainly need each other to justify their own existence, but that's kind of different from a love affair. Extremists, violent and nonviolent, are mercifully always small minorities, though, and hardly the whole world.

The clash of civilizations between Enlightenment, humanist, science directed cultures and religious authoritarian cultures still rooted in pre-science and pre- Age of Reason ideologies is very real, and extremists need and inflame it in order to flourish. We have one going right here in the U.S. between the various fear-driven, anti-science, anti-reason, liberalism-hating, Dark Ages relicts and the rest of us.
