He is a bellwether to how at least half of the current GOP Senators are leaning. They are calculating just how to hold onto power and how much it is worth to their patrons.

They are not afraid of an election defending Trump's misdeeds in office. Their only concern is an election they do not control. They are not driven by kompromat fears or doubts about significant funding from Right-wing sources.

They only worry that somehow Trump's family or cadre will disclose important truths about how the GOP actually functions. They have been reassured that Roberts and the other 4 will bend any law to keep overall power in the GOP, and as long as they control the executive and cabinet they can do no wrong.
