He's barely a Democrat at all, and is attempting to appease the voters in his district, which went +7 for Trump. If he runs again in 2020, which I doubt, he is certain to lose. Democrats won't vote for him, and the Republicans who have voted for him in the past will have a prominent Republican to vote for in 2020.

Rep. Peterson is done in the House. He's old enough to retire, so that is what he will do. His vote against impeachment will probably assure him of some financial support later. But, his career in Congress ends this year, I guarantee.
