But, no, public figures are not exempted from filing slander or libel suits. Due to their position and to freedom of speech, it is very difficult for them to win a libel or slander suit. But if the claims in their suit meet the high bar of criteria, they can sue and win.
They have to prove malicious intent on the part of the person they accuse and document losses and/or the loss of the ability to maintain their career due to a proven untruth by the accused. Since comedians use satire, and parody, they have a wide lattitude in what they can say or write. Malicious intent is very hard to establish.
More pertinent to this board is the fact that the OP does not give context or a link. It poses a question in a way that could easily be taken at face value, as happened with some posters who might have believed and repeated the shoplifting story, only to look and feel foolish.
The OP shows us the need for caution and skepticism in responding to and reacting to an OP or other post on face value without context or link.
