I've long been a reader of 19th century books on the science and technology of that time. All full of finely-done illustrations. A good friend of mine, years ago, was a scientific illustrator. Her attention to detail was remarkable, and she could illustrate something far better than any photograph could. That was especially true of microscopic things. I helped her at one point by finding a high-end stereoscopic microscope at a reasonable price for her. My reward was an 8" x 10" ink drawing of a paramecium, drawn while using the instrument. It's hanging in my bathroom.
