1. The economy isn't terrible. We can argue who should get credit for it. whether it's really as good as Trump claims, and we can point out that segments are being left behind, but for most people, right now, it isn't terrible.

2. Trump and the GOP have mastered appealing to visceral, emotional issues that energize the base. Guns, abortion, immigration, etc. Democrats do it too on their own set of issues but they aren't as good at it as Republicans and the Democratic base isn't as monolithic as the Republican base.
