(3,782 posts)Last week's message was about protecting yourself from the toxicity. This is necessary if the Trumpian relatives refuse to abide by the rule of not discussing politics. But even that doesn't mean you have to or should hate them. I was estranged from my own parents for 17 years, not because of politics but because of other toxic control issues, and at no time did I ever hate them. Fortunately over time I matured and they mellowed and the day came when I ran into them and realized they couldn't hurt me any more, and we reconnected, which was fortunate because I had years to spend with my mother before she died and I'm here to help my father as he approaches 80 years old. To this day he doesn't understand how that 17 years happened, and it's impossible for me to explain to him; it was unfortunate but necessary. I think that is the way Bill would advise approaching your toxic Trumpian relatives.
