(5,961 posts)Republicans/Conservatives believe deeply in appearances and branding, so we will continue to have at least the appearance of elections. But America will become much more authoritarian - like Brazil or Argentina. I think the endgame for years for the Republicans as to establish themselves as a permanent majority along the lines of what the PRI was in Mexico for years.
The other end game is to take the SCOTUS to the Status Quo Ante the Warren Court. Not just rolling back abortion rights - but rolling back segregation protection, voting rights, the right to an attorney, and a variety of protections from the police.
Work like Hell in this election - not just at the Presidential level, but at the local level as well. If this goes sideways, though, consider the following:
- Consider purchasing a firearm and learning how to use it. Statistically, gun ownership is a bad idea, but if it becomes open season on progressives and/or minorities, then that calculus changes.
- To the degree possible, get your finances in order.
- Obtain a passport.
- Inventory your assets and skill sets. Can you make a living outside the US if you had to? Are there skills you can obtain.
- When a building is invaded by a shooter, the watchwords are "Hide, Flee, Fight." The same will be true in an authoritarian government situation that could very well devolve into Civil War. Are you going to stay and actively resist? Try to blend in and outlive this? Head out of the US?
- If you are considering leaving, look before you leap. How much income or cash on hand will be required? Is the government where you are headed appreciably better than what you are leaving? What about your immediate and extended family?
- If you are staying, consider what you may be called upon to endure or sacrifice.
